Ann Arbor College of Martial Arts - Youth Martial Arts

The children's programs at the Ann Arbor College of Martial Arts and Fitness offer unparalleled tools for self-protection, opportunities for personal development, and a solid foundation for focus and self-discipline.


First and foremost, our programs are designed for your child to get home safely - there are no forms, fancy kicks, or techniques that aren't practical for real-life situations. We teach children to be aware of, to navigate, and to traverse their surroundings safely and thoughtfully in order to promote safe behavior. Our curriculum is age and size-appropriate, allowing every child to safely train, while diminishing the chances of accidental injury in class. We consistently stress that our system is a self-defense system, not a “sport fighting” or “tournament sport” system and should not be used to impress their friends as party tricks. Our students understand that the techniques we teach have the potential to hurt other kids and adults, and should only be used as a last resort for self-defense.


Our Philosophy on Children’s Martial Arts


Children are the foundation of our future and we want to provide the best tools to ensure their success. We believe success is grounded in the core values of aspiration, compassion, confidence, honesty, integrity, justice, and respect. Motivating kids through exercise, personal safety, and discipline is a powerful way to help them foster these values.


Our Godai Goshinjutsu Martial Arts classes are structured to keep children engaged and learning. Each month, classes focus on a central theme with activities chosen to reinforce that theme. Our fun and organized curriculum creates a dynamic where children are continuously rewarded for focus, discipline, respect, and cooperation.


To further develop our students' skills, we instill a code of respect. This code includes bowing to their instructor and the training space when entering and exiting as an acknowledgment of where they are and what they are doing at that moment. We also insist that students address the instructors as "Sir,' "Ma'am," "Mr.," or "Ms." By adhering to these rules, the etiquette advocated in our class turns into self-discipline and courtesy in their daily lives.



Our Children Programs:


Tiny Champs (ages 4-6)


For our youngest students in the Tiny Champs program, we emphasize fun, awareness, hand-eye coordination, agility, and vocalization skills. Utilizing exciting games and obstacle courses, our enthusiastic instructors teach your child how to avoid trouble and physical harm with rolling, dodging, and proper falling techniques. These stimulating games help lay the foundations for more advanced self-defense. As your child grows older and develops greater control over his or her mind and body, we begin to convey age-appropriate self-defense concepts and techniques, and the circumstances in which they should be used.


Little Champions (ages 7-10)


As children get older, they gain more freedom than they've had before. This time spent without direct supervision increases the opportunity for danger. In the Little Champions program, our primary goal is to teach your child how to get home safely! Our enthusiastic instructors use mock scenarios and exciting activities to teach your child how to avoid trouble with escape, evasion, rolling, dodging, climbing, and proper falling techniques. We focus on realistic self-defense techniques, physical conditioning, and verbal conflict de-escalation. Because physical confrontation should always be a last resort, our instructors address and articulate situations in which students may be forced to use these techniques.


Juniors (ages 11-14)


As children move into adolescence, they are exposed to the world with little parental protection against bullies and strangers. In the Juniors program, our primary goal is to teach your growing child how to deescalate a potentially volatile situation both verbally and physically, with the intent of getting home safely! Our instructors simulate common scenarios that your child could possibly be exposed to, and provide quick solutions that increase the chances of a successful escape.


Godai Goshinjutsu Martial Arts is not just another after-school activity.

Basketball, soccer, football, hockey, gymnastics, and baseball are all great activities for children, but Godai Goshinjutsu Martial Arts is ‘personal development through physical discipline’. Our exciting, yet disciplined, classes will focus a child’s attention, thus improving his or her ability to learn. Learning builds a sense of accomplishment. With each new accomplishment, a student's self-confidence grows, and this confidence is the first step in the empowerment of an individuals physical and mental abilities.


Once we begin to develop a student’s self-confidence we are then able to instill the values of respect, courtesy, honestly, perseverance and integrity that are the foundation of Martial Arts, dating back thousands of years. Furthermore, your child will develop perseverance, which is a non-quitting spirit to overcome life's obstacles. Instilling a non-quitting spirit helps a child overcome challenges, succeed in the face of adversity, and finally, set and then achieve goals.


These combined physical and character foundations that Godai Goshinjutsu Martial Arts develops helps children excel in their academic studies, sports, and social endeavors. It ensures that they will have the confidence in themselves and the character to make the right decisions when confronted with negative peer pressure. Godai Goshinjutsu Martial Arts is not a team sport, the only person that you are competing with is "Yourself" to be the best “You” you can be. Students come to us from age three to seventy-three. Some students are in shape while others are overweight. Some come for self-defense, some for fitness, and many come to have fun. Regardless of these different student demographics and reasons for attending the Ann Arbor College of Martial Arts, each person is treated equally and is trained to the best of their ability and potential.
